Cholesterol Meds. What You Should Know

Here is the latest news.

The Pen IS Mightier Than The Sword… and The Gun, Knife, or Grenade!

WHY are you taking statin drugs (cholesterol-lowering medications)? Because an M.D. wrote you a prescription? Their pen is mightier than any sword because filling that hand written prescription maybe deadlier than any combat weapon.

Let’s review health basics 101:

Cholesterol is NOT the cause of heart disease!

HDL percentage is a far more potent indicator for heart disease risk. Here are the two ratios you should pay attention to:

  1. HDL/Total Cholesterol Ratio: Should ideally be above 24 percent. If below 10 percent, you have a significantly elevated risk for heart disease.
  2. Triglyceride/HDL Ratio: Should be below 2.

Remember: Your body NEEDS cholesterol—it is important in the production of cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help you to digest fat. Cholesterol also helps your brain form memories and is vital to your neurological function. Having too little cholesterol may INCREASE your risk for cancer, immune system depression, memory loss, Parkinson's disease, hormonal imbalances, muscle disease, stroke, depression, sexual dysfunction, suicide, pancreatic and liver disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and violent behavior.

900 Studies Show Statin Drugs are Dangerous

Statins currently available on the U.S. market are:

  • Advicor  (lovastatin with niacin)
  • Altoprev (lovastatin) –
  • Caduet [atorvastatin with amlodipine (Norvasc)]
  • Crestor (rosuvastatin)
  • Lescol (fluvastatin)
  • Lipitor (atorvastatin)
  • Mevacor (lovastatin)
  • Pravachol (pravastatin)
  • Simcor (niacin/imvastatin)
  • Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin)
  • Zocor (simvastatin)

Congestive heart failure:

Could your cholesterol medication be causing your heart disease? We are currently in the midst of a congestive heart failure epidemic in the United States--while the incidence of heart attack has declined slightly, an increase in the number of heart failure cases has outpaced these gains. Deaths attributed to heart failure more than doubled from 1989 to 1997.13 (Statins were first given pre-market approval in 1987.) Interference with production of Co-Q10 by statin drugs is the most likely explanation. The heart is a muscle and it cannot work when deprived of Co-Q10.  Maybe the reason your M.D. put you on blood pressure medications is because your statin caused the problem in the first place? Recent studies have suggested that taking statin drugs in order to prevent heart disease has been proven to be worthless and without long term benefits. In addition to the statin, think about all of the added medications that you may have to take to reduce the side effects of the initial medication?  You can make a change in your lifestyle that can make big changes on your body. This includes reducing and keeping inflammation under control through the right diet and getting the right fats in your body.

Cancer

In every study with rodents to date, statins have caused cancer.  Why have we not seen such a dramatic correlation in human studies? Because cancer takes a long time to develop and most of the statin trials do not go on longer than two or three years. Still, in one trial, the CARE trial, breast cancer rates of those taking a statin went up 1500 percent.  In the Heart Protection Study, non-melanoma skin cancer occurred in 243 patients treated with simvastatin compared with 202 cases in the control group. Manufacturers of statin drugs have recognized the fact that statins depress the immune system, an effect that can lead to cancer and infectious disease.
